First SharePoint 2007 implementation for Further Education
New College Portal Home Page Parabola have implemented SharePoint 2007 for Esher College in what is believed to be the first full scale SharePoint 2007 implementation in Further Education.
Delivered for the start of the 2007/08 academic year,
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) will provide the latest tools to support staff and students in teaching, learning and administration.
The project was an upgrade of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to MOSS 2007. Before the upgrade, Parabola transferred all the databases and applications over to SQL Server 2005. The Staff Portal was then upgraded to MOSS 2007 and re-branded. Using feedback from the existing Portal, the College Portal was redesigned and restructured for ease of use. All existing content was migrated and the custom web parts and applications Parabola had developed were upgraded to work with MOSS 2007.
Staff and students now have improved access to curriculum content and collaboration features. Personalised features such as My Mail are now available, with targeted information meaning users only see what is relevant to them. By integrating MOSS 2007 with existing college systems, student information is now easily accessible along with Timetable and Assignment web parts.
The clean and simple site templates give a corporate look and feel, whilst features such as the Content Management System, Workflow and Forms Management make MOSS 2007 easier to administer than SharePoint 2003.
David Lloyd, Director ILT Development was impressed with the project overall:
“We're delighted with the service we have received, it is always so easy to communicate with Parabola”
